With nearly three decades at BMG and its parent company Bertelsmann, Thomas Scherer has built a career spanning the full creative and commercial spectrum of music as an artist, songwriter, music publisher, music producer, label owner, and executive. He began his career in his native Germany as a drummer and member of the band Playhaus and as a music producer. In 1989, he joined the former BMG Ariola as A&R and Marketing Manager before running his own record label, Dolce Vita, through the former BMG Hansa and producing for BMG in 1993.
In 1994, Scherer founded Media Pool GmbH, an integrated studio, label, publishing, distribution, promotion, and events business, which he led until 2000. From 2005 to 2008, he served as Managing Director of Parasongs Europe GmbH and Parasongs Japan LTD.
Scherer joined the newly formed BMG in 2008 as one of the company’s original employees at its Berlin headquarters. As SVP, International Repertoire Coordination, he oversaw BMG’s Writer Services team across 10 international offices, supporting a roster of acclaimed songwriters including Bruno Mars, John Legend, Will.i.am, and Bebe Rexha.
In 2014, he relocated to Los Angeles as EVP, Writer Services, coordinating opportunities between the U.S. and international markets while leading signings, acquisitions, and partnership agreements across the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Australia. He also helped develop BMG’s SoundLab writers’ camps and shape the company’s global Writer Services function.
In 2016, BMG promoted Scherer to EVP Frontline Publishing, US & Global Writer Services, making him responsible for all international publishing creative teams. Additionally in January 2018, he assumed the role of head of BMG China. In 2019, Scherer was named EVP, Marketing & Repertoire, Los Angeles. He was later promoted to President, Repertoire & Marketing, Los Angeles and New York. Under his leadership, BMG has signed and re-signed leading writers in the U.S. including Diane Warren, Bebe Rexha, and Lewis Capaldi, and has secured dozens of acquisitions, including landmark deals involving Mötley Crüe and Paul Simon, among others.
In January 2024, Scherer was appointed President, Global Catalog Recordings, while retaining his responsibilities as President, Music Publishing, North America.
