MUSEXPO EUROPE 2009 TALENT SPOTLIGHT
An eclectic array of top emerging international and UK talent is set to arrive in London, England (the music and entertainment capital of Europe) next month for the second annual MUSEXPO Europe at The Cumberland Hotel in the centre London. This top tier of unearthed global talent will showcase at the legendary 100 Club and Borderline club in the heart of London. Most of the talent is available for signing, licensing, booking, legal representation and/or publishing.
Here’s an overview of some of the international talent that will be showcasing from June 29 – July 1 at the 100 Club and Borderline – the full schedule will soon be available at www.musexpo.net.
THE BROKEN BEATS (Origin: Aarhus, Denmark): Denmark’s The Broken Beats are led by charismatic singing/songwriting guitarist Kim Munk, who initially formed the group in the spring of 2001 to seek the ideal of the “unperfected band,” a group with no limitations, with space for both musical and human errors. The early shows were unpredictable, to say the least: sometimes the Broken Beats performed as a trio, while at other gigs there were up to 17 musicians onstage. Nonetheless, they quickly picked up a group of loyal supporters in their hometown and recorded a CD that earned them a deal with a German record label. Alas, delays abounded, resulting in the album never garnering an official release. Undeterred, Munk collected a new group of likeminded musical cohorts and spent the next two years relentlessly touring throughout Germany, Austria and Scandinavia, wearing out three busses in the process…and, ultimately, fraying the nerves of the other band members. But now Munk has returned with a new seven-piece outfit whose sound he smilingly refers to as, “Rock musicians who sold out.” Their new album, You’re Powerful, Beautiful and Extraordinary, has already spawned a Danish hit with leadoff single “The Rules,” which most closely resembles a mad amalgam of Arthur Lee’s Love backed by Clarence Clemons. The Broken Beats will perform at MUSEXPO Europe 2009 in London, England on Tuesday, June 30th at The 100 Club.
THE CUMSHOTS (Origin: Oslo, Norway): Norwegian quintet The Cumshots first came together in the waning months of the 20th century, dissatisfied with the cartoonish state of northern metal and determined to put their own stamp upon the scene. Adopting some memorable monikers, vocalist Max Cargo, guitarists El Doom and Freddie Tennessee, drummer Chris Bartender and the disappointingly normal-sounding bassist Tommy Dean proceeded to do just that with their first two albums, Last Sons of Evil and Norwegian Jesus, the latter of which was nominated for a Norwegian Grammy. But perhaps their greatest notoriety came from an incident during a live performance, when a couple from the group “F[ornicate] For Forest” put on a live sex show in order to raise funds for preserving the rain forest. They’d received permission from the band beforehand…a decision that ended up costing the Cumshots a $10,000 fine. Now signed to Germany’s Rodeostar Records, the Cumshots recently released the fearsomely ferocious album, Just Quit Trying, featuring such rabble-rousing numbers as “Praying for Cancer,” “Punchdrunk on Death,” “Bitter Erection,” “Baptized in Broken Glass” and “I Drink Alone,” which isn’t to be confused with the George Thorogood tune of the same title: “I found out that it’s best for me and everybody else concerned when I drink alone,” laughs Cargo. “Then I can keep the damage down.” The Cumshots will perform at MUSEXPO Europe 2009 in London, England on Wednesday, July 1st at The 100 Club.
DONOTS (Origin: Germany): For fifteen years now Donots have been Germany’s punk rock standard-bearers, releasing half a dozen albums and playing well over 1,000 live shows, sharing stages with acts ranging from Green Day, Blink-182, The Hives, Sum 41, Iggy Pop, The Offspring and Weezer to Linkin Park and Bad Religion, The Bloodhound Gang, Anti-Flag, AFI, The Cure and Judas Priest. Though the band enjoyed almost a decade of success with GUN Records/Supersonic (a division of SonyBMG Germany) and Sweden’s acclaimed Burning Heart Records for the rest of Europe, in 2006 The Donots decided they wanted to leave the major label world behind. After about a year’s worth of negotiations, they were freed from their contracts and formed their own label, Solitary Man Records, through which they released the wryly titled Coma Chameleon in early 2008. The album received glowing reviews and earned them their most successful airplay and television video play ever, particularly for the song “Stop the Clocks,” which has garnered more than a million YouTube views to date and checked in at No.10 on the Visions magazine reader’s poll for “Best Song of 2008,” while the group itself landed at No.8 of “Best International Bands.” Donots will perform at MUSEXPO Europe 2009 in London, England on Tuesday, June 30th at The Borderline.
THE KORDZ (Origin: Beirut, Lebanon): Putting together a band is never the easiest of tasks…but imagine trying to do so in the midst of a long civil war! Yet that’s actually how the members of The Kordz first hooked up at the famed American University of Beirut when several students decided to form a band. After several different lineups and relentless gigging around the Mediterranean, the current trio of vocalist Moe Hamzeh, keyboardist Mazen Slibini and guitarist Nadim Sioufi has risen to the peak of the Middle Eastern rock scene. For example, Grammy-winning musician Mark LeVine, author of the book Heavy Metal Islam, describes The Kordz as “without a doubt the best rock band from Morocco to Pakistan, and perhaps anywhere…The Kordz are setting the standard for the most powerful and innovative live and recorded rock anywhere on the planet.” The group has spent the past two years working on a new album, Beauty & the East, with Grammy-nominated producer Ulrich Wild (Static-X, Deftones, White Zombie, Breaking Benjamin), recording in Canada, Los Angeles and Lebanon during that time and utilizing an Alt All-Star rhythm section of bassist Andy Curran (Soho 69) and drummer Jeff Burrows (The Tea Party). The Kordz will perform at MUSEXPO Europe 2009 in London, England on Wednesday, July 1st at The 100 Club.
PINT SHOT RIOT (Origin: Coventry, England): Pint Shot Riot are rapidly building a name for themselves that is starting to extend beyond the bounds of their hometown of Coventry, England. Melding the jagged rhythms and cutting lyrics of the Clash, the blue-collar rock attitude of Oasis and the melodious, harmonic sound of the Kinks, Pint Shot Riot’s songs favor hope over despair and so appealed to audiences that, six months after the current lineup formed, they were playing on the Glastonbury Introduces stage at the famed festival of that name and were praised by BBC Radio One’s Huw Stephens as “one of the best new bands in the UK” that year. They’ve since shared stages with the likes of We Are Scientists, Dirty Pretty Things, The View, Athlete and fellow Coventry natives The Enemy. The band’s first single, the ominously titled “Punches Kicks Trenches and Swords,” earned significant airplay throughout the UK and was chosen by EA Games for inclusion in the “SIMS 3” soundtrack in November 2008; a month later, they signed a publishing deal with EA/Nettwerk joint venture Artwerk Music. During a segment of BBC DJ Steve Lamacq’s “Music Roundtable” show, members of the Kaiser Chiefs described “Punches…” as “an awesome track, different to what’s going on--we would love to see them live and hear it louder!” Pint Shot Riot will perform at MUSEXPO Europe 2009 in London, England on Tuesday, June 30th at The 100 Club.

MUSEXPO EUROPE 2009 TALENT SPOTLIGHT
An array of top emerging international and UK talent is set to arrive in London, England (the music and entertainment capital of Europe) next month for the 2nd annual MUSEXPO Europe at The Cumberland Hotel in London. This top tier of unearthed global talent will showcase at the legendary 100 Club and Borderline clubs in the heart of London. Most of the talent is available for signing, licensing, booking, legal representation and/or publishing.
Here’s an overview of some of the international talent that will be showcasing from June 29 – July 1 at the 100 Club and Borderline – the full schedule will soon be available at www.musexpo.net.
ALL MANKIND (Origin: Sydney, Australia): Australian act All Mankind has become a fan favorite both at home and abroad, having performed over 500 times in the last three years to more than 100,000 ecstatic fans. The quartet, comprised of vocalist/guitarist/pianist Rich Beeston, brother Dave Beeston on drums and backing vocals, bassist Gavin Perkins and lead guitarist Dorny, has parleyed that live success into album sales into the thousands, as well as award nominations for songwriting and performance in both Australia and America. The single “I Give in to You,” earned a No.1 spot on the independent chart and received nationwide airplay in Australia and regional airplay in the US. In February 2008 All Mankind went into the studio with noted ARIA-winning producer David Nicholas (Elton John, Sting), who called the resulting effort, Puzzles, “a great album from a great young Australian band.” The band’s latest single, “Can You Hear Me” (produced by Grammy-nominated and the Juno Award-winning producer Brandon Friesen), was released in January 2009 and is now garnering radio support throughout the US, Germany, Australia and beyond. The group has been garnering musical and live comparisons to Coldplay, Keane and U2 and is currently available for worldwide signing, licensing and booking. All Mankind will perform at MUSEXPO Europe 2009 in London, England on Tuesday, June 30th at The Borderline Club.
ALOHA FROM HELL (Origin: Bavaria, Germany): The intriguingly monikered Aloha From Hell is a five-piece from the Bavaria region of Germany, composed of femme fatale vocalist Vivi Bauernschmidt, guitarists Moo Keith and Andy Gerhard, bassist Max Forman and drummer Feli Keith. In 2007 the fledgling quintet won the “Bandnewcomer Contest,” sponsored by Germany’s biggest youth magazine, Bravo. Winning the competition was a dream come true for the group, which was rewarded with a recording contract from SonyBMG. Before they even released a single they had attracted fan clubs in Spain, France and, of course, Germany. They did eventually release their first single, “Don’t Gimme That,” in June 2008, hitting No.8 on the Austrian singles chart and No.1 on the Czech video hit list. January 2009 witnessed their debut album, No More Time to Waste, take Germany by storm, debuting in the Japanese Top 10 shortly thereafter. In February 2009 Sony Music Japan picked the band as one of their priorities for 2009 and brought them over for their first promotional tour, inspiring product manager Mirei Teramura to enthuse, “Immediately after the first listen to the AFH album, we fell in love with their talent and passion. We absolutely believe that AFH will be a new rock star representing the next generation.” Aloha From Hell will perform at MUSEXPO Europe 2009 in London, England on Monday, June 29th at the 100 Club.
KATE MILLER-HEIDKE (Origin: Brisbane, Australia): After three EPs had brought her to the attention of Australian music lovers, Kate Miller-Heidke ascended to the upper reaches of the ARIA charts with her debut album, Little Eve, in June 2007. The disc was certified Gold in her native land and earned Miller-Heidke four ARIA nominations: Best Female Artist, Best Pop Release and Breakthrough Artist for both the album and its hit single, “Words.” That earned her a life-altering Australian tour with Cyndi Lauper, after which word of Kate reached Los Angeles producer Mickey Petralia (Beck, eels, Peaches, Dandy Warhols), who produced her sophomore effort, Curiouser. The album was released earlier this year to rapturous reviews, with Rave magazine alliteratively allowing, “Curious, colorful chanteuse clocks up another classy collection,” while Sunshine Coast Daily simply stated, “Kate Miller-Heidke has absolutely nailed it with her new album Curiouser.” To top it all off, in early May 2009 Miller-Heidke was named the winner of the International Songwriting Competition for current single “Caught in the Crowd,” co-written with longtime musical collaborator (and life partner) Keir Nuttall. As a result, she received $20,000 worth of musical equipment in addition to a $25,000 (USD) cash prize--which she’s using to bring her band to MUSEXPO Europe. Kate Miller-Heidke will perform at MUSEXPO Europe 2009 in London, England on Wednesday, July 1st at The Borderline Club.
MADS LANGER (Origin: Jutland, Denmark): Denmark’s Mads Langer is attracting a lot of A&R interest on both sides of the Atlantic. Currently signed to respected Scandinavian indie Copenhagen Records, for which he released both his debut album, Attention Please, and 2009’s eponymous follow-up, Langer has already been receiving rave reviews for his commanding stage presence, multi-instrumental ability and keen songwriting sense. BBC Radio 1 DJ Mike Davies refers to Langer as “a chilled-out version of Radiohead and Muse,” while Martin Ashplant of www.inthenews.co.uk states, “There is every chance this young man can go much farther than Scandinavia. Soulful and wistful with Muse-like vocals that can tug, Langer…has a chance to take the world by storm.” The first single from Attention Please, “Breaking News,” was immediately given “Hit of the Week” status at influential Danish radio station P3 while also receiving a bevy of American airplay on such tastemaking outlets as KDLD “Indie 103.1” Los Angeles, WKQX “Q101” Chicago, KTCL Denver and KATT Oklahoma City, among others. Still available for signing and licensing worldwide (outside Scandinavia), Langer figures to be a prolific artist: “A minute doesn’t go by, not even a second, without a stream of new musical ideas or familiar phrases running through my head,” he says. “My songs spring from that source.” Mads Langer will perform at MUSEXPO Europe 2009 in London, England on Wednesday, July 1st at The Borderline Club.
THE JESSIE ROSE TRIP (Origin: Manchester, England): Though they just released their debut single, “Forever and a Day,” in May 2009, Manchester’s The Jessie Rose Trip are already making waves across the UK. The quartet first formed in April 2008 behind Jessie Rose, a 20-year-old chanteuse who also plays guitar, keys and a mean ukulele, backed by drummer James Wood, double-bassist Sarah Buckley and trumpeter/keyboardist Jonny “Tiger” Thompson. The band has played live sessions for BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 6 and BBC Radio Manchester, performed on stage with Damon Gough (Badly Drawn Boy) and won a recording trip to LA on Xfm DJ John Kennedy’s X-Posure show. “Jessie Rose has one of those voices that comes along once in a blue moon,” says BBC Manchester’s Chris Long. “The lazy will compare it to Amy Winehouse, while the more savvy ear will hear the potential for it to flourish into one of the greatest set of soul pipes this city has produced. Couple it with the ukulele rhythms and great piano lines, and you get something very special. If there’s any sense left in music, Jessie will be huge.” The Jessie Rose Trip will perform at MUSEXPO Europe 2009 in London, England on Wednesday, July 1st at the 100 Club.

INTERNATIONAL SONGWRITING SUMMIT COMES TO LONDON, ENGLAND
Songwriters, publishers, producers, record label A&Rs and synch specialists are to gather in London for a one-day event focused on the song as a forerunner of MUSEXPO Europe.
The International Songwriting Summit, which is being organized by A&R Worldwide in conjunction with publishers Jens-Markus Wegener and Tom Nevermann from AMV-Talpa in Germany and Hiten Bharadia from Phrased Differently Music UK & Sweden, will focus on the creative aspects of songwriting. This exclusive event will bring together people involved in different stages of the process of maximizing the potential of a song. The goal will be to create the foundation for a hit global song and allow participants to gain new perspectives and ideas as well as new relationships.
The all-day event will take place at the conference’s main venue, The Cumberland Hotel in central London, on Monday June 29. It will be based around a format of keynote presentations, roundtable sessions and creative workshops. The rest of the conference kicks off that evening with its official launch party and continues for the next two days. Attendance at MUSEXPO’s International Songwriter Summit will be by invitation only, including several dozen creative participants who are already attending MUSEXPO Europe who will benefit from participation at the event as well as providing unique insights to the songwriting processes.
Jens-Markus Wegener, Managing Director of AMV Talpa, says, “London is the perfect location in Europe and MUSEXPO’s International Songwriting Summit is the ideal event to discuss with partners from the worldwide creative business how to build new platforms and find fresh ways of doing business in a rapidly changing global market. MUSEXSPO and A&R Worldwide’s strong international network will enable us to bring together the world’s top music talent-finders and developers to create unconventional ways of building bridges for the future.”
Hiten Bharadia, Managing Director of Phrased Differently Music UK & Sweden, says, “It's refreshing to see an event like MUSEXPO Europe focusing in on the creative challenges facing songwriters, publishers, producers and A&Rs. After all, if the songs aren't amazing, then there’s no point worrying about the business model as there won't be any business.”
Sat Bisla, President/Founder, A&R Worldwide & MUSEXPO commented, “A&R Worldwide is delighted to team up with our partners Hiten Bharadia (Phrased Differently), Jens-Markus Wegener and Tom Nevermann (AMV Talpa) for the International Songwriting Summit. Our mission is to bring together some of the top creative mindsets that normally don’t have an opportunity to interact face to face with one another. This will be a priceless opportunity for all involved, and our goal is to have an end result of creating some of the most inspiring new songs of the decade for a world and music industry that desperately needs hope, inspiration and a vision for the future. Music is the world’s greatest communicator and we are all confident that the International Songwriting Summit at MUSEXPO Europe will play an important role in building a healthier global songwriting eco-system.”

British-born and Los Angeles-based A&R Worldwide/MUSEXPO founder Sat Bisla says, “We had such a truly fantastic response to the first MUSEXPO Europe that we vowed to return to London as soon as we could. We showed that there is a gap in the market for a truly international event in London that combines music and business and places the strongest emphasis on connecting people and ideas that create tangible outcomes.
“This year the event will build on the quality, focus and ethos the world has come to expect from MUSEXPO in the US and Europe. In 2008 we showed we could deliver quality in depth. In 2009 we’re going to do it even more.”
London is calling MUSEXPO back!
We were so pleased with the response to the inaugural MUSEXPO Europe last year that we vowed to bring the event back to London as soon as possible. And we’re delighted to be able to confirm that we’ll be doing just that this summer when we return to the Cumberland Hotel just by London’s historic Marble Arch. Watch this space for the announcement over the next couple of weeks.
The basic format of conference and networking sessions during the day and live shows by up-and-coming artists at night will remain at the heart of the event, but this year it will be even better than 2008. Last year we attracted hundreds of the most influential music, media and technology executives from 30+ countries across four continents, and hosted speakers as diverse as XL Recordings chief Richard Russell, Sony UK CEO Ged Doherty, EMI global head of A&R Nick Gatfield, Benchmark Capital entrepreneur in residence David Goldberg, Electronic Arts head of music Steve Schnur, head of MySpace UK Anthony Lukom, and industry pioneers Seymour Stein (Sire Records) and Daniel Miller (Mute) and Harvey Goldsmith. This year we’re going to do that and a whole lot more besides.
We’re also going to build on the live foundations established last year, when the bands performing included the likes of Temper Trap and thecocknbullkid ’ who were both unsigned at the time but have now gone on to ink deals with Infectious and Moshi Moshi/Island respectively ’ and hotly-tipped newcomer Laura Izibor (Atlantic). If you’re interested in having your band play MUSEXPO Europe 2009 then click here (insert link) to find out how to submit your demo via our partner SonicBids.
We’ve also still got some sponsorship opportunities open, so if you’re interested in pushing your brand in front of an audience of key international tastemakers and decision makers then click here. Last year our partners included MCPS-PRS, MusicMatrix, Nokia Music, Eletronic Arts, Sonicbids, GoNorth, Music Export Finland and Arbor Records.
We’re really excited to be coming back to London (after we’ve got MUSEXPO Los Angeles out of the way of course’) and we hope you feel the same way. If you want to be added to our mailing list so that you can be sure you’re among the first to hear about all the updates as they happen, then sign up here (insert link).
